#RacismNotWelcome street sign unveiling at UTS

When

Tuesday 21 March 2023 from 12pm to 1:30pm

This International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, join us on campus to officially unveil the #RacismNotWelcome street signs at UTS.

Launched in 2020, the #RacismNotWelcome campaign saw the installation of street signs in the community to acknowledge the impacts of racism.

UTS is the first Australian university to install these signs on campus, as part of our commitment to being an inclusive and actively anti-racist university community.

Witness the signs being installed, hear from key members of the UTS community, and enjoy a BBQ lunch (vegan, vegetarian and halal options available) - please register so we can cater accordingly.

Speakers from the UTS community include:

  • Professor Andrew Parfitt, Vice-Chancellor and President of UTS

  • The Hon. Verity Firth, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Social Justice and Inclusion)

  • Industry Professor Lindon Coombes, Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education & Research

  • Kurt Cheng, UTS Council member and a final-year Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Communication (Social and Political Sciences) student

Hosted by: Dr Elaine Laforteza, Equity and Diversity Project Officer (Cultural Diversity), Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion

AUSLAN interpreter: Lizzi Price.

We also invite you to take part in our pop-up installation on the day – UTS’s anti-racism pledge – where you can write your name and contribute to a collective piece of art.

Event photography and filming

This event will be photographed and filmed. If you do not wish to be photographed and/or filmed, please contact Elaine.Laforteza@uts.edu.au.

About the #RacismNotWelcome campaign

Initiated by the Inner West Multicultural Network in partnership with Addi Road, the #RacismNotWelcome campaign was launched by the Inner West Council in November 2020 with the installation of #RacismNotWelcome street signs in the community, along with videos, an art exhibition and public forums.

The campaign is a community-led, grassroots initiative intended to acknowledge the impacts of racism, validate people’s lived experiences with racism, and normalise conversations about racism.

Run by the UTS Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion in collaboration with Addi Road.
