The NSSO's May concert opens with George Gershwin's An American in Paris. This orchestral tone poem depicts the experience of an American visitor in Paris. It captures the sounds of the city, including the famous French taxi horns! Blending jazz influences with traditional orchestration, it is a vibrant and atmospheric piece.
Victor Herbert's Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor is known for its lyrical melodies and emotional depth, highlighting the expressive capabilities of the cello. It features a strong interplay between the soloist and the orchestra, making it a key work in the cello repertoire. An American contemporary of Dvořák, it is this work that served as the inspiration for Dvořák's own Cello concerto, which premiered just two years later. To perform the work we are thrilled to be joined by up-and-coming Australian cellist Noah Oshiro. Now in his final year of studies at the Sydney Conservatorium, Noah has performed wth Musica Viva, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Opera Australia. Noah was the 2024 winner of the 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso award.
Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" combines elements of Czech folk music with inspirations from American musical traditions. It is celebrated for its memorable themes, including the famous "Largo," and its powerful exploration of new musical landscapes. It is one of the most popular symphonies in the repetoire, with plenty of well-known themes - many of which have been used in film and TV soundtracks.
