Please note: THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED.
Learn about Lady Mayoresses at Celebrate Sydney Town Hall with Curator Margaret Betteridge, featuring items from the City’s Civic Collection associated with former mayoresses.
While power has historically defined the role of the City’s mayors and lord mayors, the heroines of civic duty have been the mayoresses and lady mayoresses who, as patrons, have supported official engagements and graciously hosted receptions and charitable functions.
These events provided citizens of Sydney with opportunities to express gratitude for the mayoresses' contributions to the social and welfare aspects of the City. Invitations to such gatherings were highly esteemed as a sign of social success, and appreciative gestures often took the form of meaningful gifts.
Against the backdrop of the beautiful Parisienne salon rooms created specifically for civic entertaining, Curator Margaret Betteridge will host a special ’show and tell’ featuring items from the City’s Civic Collection associated with former mayoresses. Listen to stories about the protocols associated with civic hospitality and entertaining and be the first to see some of our latest acquisitions.
Bookings are essential.
