The opera is based on the famous fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, and follows the story of two young siblings, Hansel and Gretel, who are sent out into the woods by their mother to gather berries. Through their wits and courage, they manage to outsmart the witch and escape back to their home, where they are joyfully reunited with their father.
