Friday 9 August 2024 from 7pm to 9pm
Join us for a thrilling evening as Volant, led by saxophonist Matthew Ottignon, celebrate the launch of their ethereal album. This introspective acoustic jazz quartet features the formidable talents of pianist Lauren Tsamouras, bassist Hannah James, and drummer Holly Conner. The essence of Volant's music feels akin to the mesmerizing dance of birds in flight, crafting otherworldly shapes silhouetted against the night sky.
Through meticulous rehearsals and performances, Volant has allowed their compositions to naturally evolve, culminating in a sound that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. The album was released on July 26th via Earshift Music.
“It all comes down to sound…. you hear a life force fermenting in Matt Ottignon's tenor saxophone that can rear up like a tsunami or melt like chocolate.” ★★★★½ Sydney Morning Herald, John Shand.
Reflecting on the genesis of Volant, Ottignon states, "This album comes from a time in my life when I suddenly had the space to truly explore my craft. It is hopeful music born out of a period of deep introspection, inspired by the countless sounds that have resonated with me over the years, including The Necks and John Coltrane."
Matthew Ottignon is thrilled to host this concert at the Goethe-Institut Sydney, as part of their Goethe Lounge series. This concert is also sponsored by SIMA (sima.org.au) – Australia's home of jazz.
