Embroidery Moth Sampler

When

Saturday 28 June from 11am to 3pm

Cost

General Admission (includes materials): $60.50

As the winter nights get longer, join artist Vita Cochran for an embroidery workshop that celebrates a beautiful nocturnal insect, the moth.

Make a sampler of seven different embroidery stitches, including stem stitch, French knots, couching, satin stitch (and a couple of stitches Vita has made up!) and bring together to create your own unique, textured embroidered MOTH. Along the way learn about moths and the history of embroidered samplers.

This workshop was developed last year when Vita was Creative in Residence at UTS library; her project was to secrete 24 life-like embroidered moths on the furniture and fixtures of the library.

No prior skills or experience required, and all materials are supplied. A 30 minute lunch-break will be scheduled.

About Vita Cochran

Vita Cochran, originally from Aotearoa and now based on Gadigal land, is known for her textile practice that spans intricate hand embroidery, dynamic abstract hangings made from second hand garments, rag rugs with art historical references and inventive functional accessories. She has a deep understanding of textile arts as learnt from the matriarchal practitioners in her family, an interest in textiles as they intersect with feminist practice and a decades-long commitment to handmaking and re-evaluating the overlooked. She has exhibited throughout Australia and New Zealand and is represented by Anna Miles Gallery in Auckland.
