Decarbonising Steel

Wednesday 15 May 2024 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Australia is well placed to unlock East Asia's steel decarbonisation future through a 'green iron key'. New technologies are emerging, and considerable investment and policy support will be required to build out the infrastructure and support the industry transition.

East Asia will largely determine the fate of iron and steel decarbonisation, led by China. There is a substantial green energy diplomacy playing out in North Asia which is shifting the technological dynamics of the market and the creation of new green energy industries.

Greening iron and steel represents both a challenge and an opportunity to support a new green iron industry in Australia. The Green Steel transition will decarbonise the hard-to-abate steel industry and also enhance our economic security and deliver significant economic benefits. The role of government in cooperation with key industry players is vital for success.
