While many writers are successful in creating engaging characters and compelling story lines, they often struggle with how to create a strong underlying structure for their work.

Key to this process is an understanding of the three key elements that are critical in structuring your work: point of view, time, and story/plot. A comprehensive understanding of these aspects of writing is of invaluable assistance in realising the full potential of story and character.

This one-day workshop with one of Australia’s leading teachers of creative writing, Anthony Macris, is designed for intermediate to advanced fiction writers who wish to develop their skills in how to structure either a short story or longer fiction manuscript (novel or novella).

Through a series of presentations, practical exercises and small group activities, participants will learn more about these fundamental techniques; so important in making sure a manuscript has the clarity and readability that publishers are seeking.

This writing course, Craft of Fiction: Form and Structure with Anthony Macris, will be held at Writing NSW in Sydney.

Expected learning outcomes

In this workshop, participants will:

  1. Gain an understanding of how to create coherent time frames.

  2. Learn how to design a point of view schema.

  3. Learn how to shape and sequence events into compelling story lines.
