The Baro Lolo Orkestra (The Big Red Orchestra in Romanes) showcases Sydney-based musicians from the Romani and Gypsy Swing genres, lead by Lolo Lovina with horn and string section and special guest artist Mark Atkins on Yidaki.
The project pay respects to Romani ancestors and culture, and to the Aboriginal traditional owners of this country we all call home. The event will musically follow sections of the diaspora of Roma through Europe and to Australia.
The show will pay homage to Greek Romani music, Manouche Gypsy swing, Romanian, Russian and Serbian Romani music, as well as original Lolo Lovina compositions. Instrumentation will be horn and string sections, a 5 piece Manouche Gypsy Swing guitar section with soloists being Matthew Ottignon (Tim Minchin) saxophone, Leonid Beshlei (Monsieur Camembert) on accordion & piano and solo guitar.
The backdrop stage will be Lolo the Gypsy Caravan Stage; a bespoke, culturally on point, installation art stage created by Lolo Lovina band leader Sarah Bedak.
