Action! Film & War

When

Mondays to Thursdays, 9am to 8pm Fridays, 9am to 5pm Weekends, 10am to 5pm Friday 20 October 2023 to Sunday 28 April 2024

A cinematic journey featuring moving images, oral histories, artwork and objects that showcase film technology through the ages.

Action! Film & War explores the use of film to document the experiences of Australian Defence Force personnel overseas, and showcases the role of film to promote, report on, and recreate events from our military history, from before the First World War until today.

Through expertly chosen objects, images and stories, the visitor is challenged to consider the tensions between fact and fiction in the moving image’s quest to truthfully record history while also telling the best story. The exhibition also explores feature film narratives which collectively share war stories with broad audiences and frame how history is remembered.

An Australian War Memorial touring exhibition, on show at the State Library of NSW.
