Housing, long-termism and inequality.

The housing market is under the spotlight like never before. In the 12th annual Warren Hogan lecture, Besa Deda analyses the causes and consequences of the current challenges in the housing market, including the impact on inequality, and looks to potential solutions. These solutions can be costly and impact segments of the population differently. But willingness to embrace change, even difficult change, is needed to make meaningful progress. Increasingly, society is considering the future with a lens on long-termism. Besa argues that it is important for housing to also be viewed in this way to improve prosperity for future generations.

About our speaker

Besa Deda is one of Australia’s best known financial markets economists, reflecting her regular contributions to the public debate and her briefings to some of Australia’s most prominent investors, corporates and businesses.

Besa is an alumna of the University of Sydney, having completed an Honours degree in Economics in 1996. Of particular relevance here is that Besa’s Honours year coincided with Professor Warren Hogan’s final year at the University of Sydney. For many years Warren taught the public policy module of the Honours year, making Besa one of the last students Warren taught in his four decades at Sydney. She also holds a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University.

Besa is the Chief Economist for several Westpac Group institutions, including St George Bank, Bank of Melbourne, BankSA, BT, and Westpac’s Business Bank.
