It’s time to celebrate the Year of the Rat in Sydney!
There’s so much happening during the Sydney Lunar Festival with more than 100 events on offer from 25 January to 9 February. Here are just a few of the best things to do.
The kick-off event of Sydney Lunar Festival. Laneways will be transformed by a street party. There’ll be live entertainment including lion dances, roving performers, face painting, kids craft activities and delicious food.
Don’t miss the Lunar Spectacular Show. Enjoy a variety of live performances from traditional and contemporary dance to Korean drumming, Japanese hip hop and fashion shows.
Saturday 25 January
Explore the Lunar Lanterns and discover your birth sign. To celebrate the Year of the Rat, artist Claudia Chan Shaw has created a spectacular tower of 9 gold metallic, animatronic rats. Find it at First Fleet Park.
Walk around the foreshore to see the 11 other spectacular lanterns that light up the foreshore. There are some new animals to discover this year, including a rabbit, rooster and horse lanterns.
Look out for lion dances with a sparkling difference. Catch an electrifying lion and dragon dance performance as performers decorated with LEDs illuminate the foreshore.

Dragon boat races
Grab a spot harbourside and watch the biggest dragon boat races in the southern hemisphere.
More than 3,000 dragon boat race paddlers will churn the water watched by crowds of spectators.

Watch a demonstration by master calligraphy artists and go home with your own handwritten souvenir courtesy of our calligraphers. This is a free event. Bookings essential.
Green Square Lunar New Year celebrations
Thrilling lion dances, Chinese classical music performances and a red packet handout. Green Square Library and plaza will come alive with colour and sound.
Children are invited to learn how to perform a lion dance routine in a 1-hour workshop starting at 10.30am.

The Rocks Lunar Markets
The cobblestoned lanes of The Rocks will host markets featuring Asian street food and arts and crafts. Keep an eye out for the lion dance performances at 1pm and 6pm.

Sydney Lunar New Year Fair
To close off the festival, discover a fun-filled fair. There’ll be activities for kids and food trucks. Catch community performances from a wide range of community groups. They’ll take to the outdoor stage with traditional and contemporary performances.

- Learn how to create your own zodiac animal mask using a fun new papercraft technique.
