5 ways to celebrate NAIDOC Week in Sydney

There are plenty of ways to get involved in NAIDOC Week, with feasts, exhibitions and talks.

Here are our picks of the program, which runs from 7 to 14 July.

Wayne Quilliam: Instaculture

Wayne Quilliam: Instaculture

Artist Wayne Quilliam presents a 24-hour public art exhibition. To represent the 6 seasons of Aboriginal cultures, the exhibition will show earth, sky, freshwater and saltwater scapes captured on digital camera and drone.

There’ll also be free family workshops during NAIDOC Week. They’re hosted alongside the exhibition with the local Koomurri Aboriginal Incursions.

Truth and Treaty tour

Explore the complex story of truth and treaty in Australian history in this interactive tour led by First Nations staff. Exploring the theme of 2019 NAIDOC Week – Voice, Treaty, Truth – Wiradjuri archivist Nathan Mudyi Sentence will offer explanations, commentary, hidden stories and anecdotes about the truths behind the popular myths, and the argument for a treaty.

NAIDOC at NCIE

2019 marks the 10th year NCIE has hosted a community NAIDOC event. There’s something for everyone, with performances, films, a cooking demonstration with Aunty Beryl, touch footy games, basketball, story reading and a free feed.

NAIDOC in the City

NAIDOC in the City

Come along to experience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance, song, food and more in the heart of Sydney. NAIDOC in the City is a free, family friendly day out. There’ll be lunch cooked in a traditional earth oven, performances by Aboriginal musicians, market stalls, weaving demonstrations, and sports workshops for kids.
