Be inspired by the sound of tomorrow in SIMA’s Trigger showcase, spotlighting ‘one to watch’ each season – an outstanding, early career jazz artist.
For Winter Jazz 2018, we present award-winning young double bassist, Jacques Emery.
Already in-demand as an improvising bassist in Sydney’s jazz scene, Jacques is involved with several original projects such as minimalist, improvising trio Bornholdt/Emery/Inman-Hislop and indie-jazz outfit HEKKA.
As part of the Trigger initiative, Jacques’s minimal compositions are brought to life in collaboration with two of Sydney’s most versatile and established improvisers, pianist Matt McMahon and drummer James Waples.
Hear some of the most exciting musical ideas coming from the new generation as the trio slowly unfolds huge sound worlds of Jacques’ own devising, and experiments with some well-known jazz repertoire.
Special support: Jodie Michael Trio
Winner of the 2013 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award and named one of the ‘Next Big Things’ by The Sydney Morning Herald, Jodie Michael leads this idiosyncratic exploration of late 1960s and avant-garde repertoire. They’ll explore song forms and melodic structures not commonly traversed today.
