Saturday 7 February from 2pm to 3pm
Join Julie Ewington as she explores the enduring attraction of Provence for outsiders. She will home in on the unbreakable attachment Paul Cézanne felt for his beloved birthplace of Aix-en-Provence, and Adolphe Monticelli held for Marseilles, the port city where he lived all his life.
With its golden light and pastoral vistas overlooking the Mediterranean, the region of Provence, in southern France, has attracted leading artists for over 150 years. Painters such as Claude Monet, John Peter Russell, Vincent van Gogh and later modernists including Dorrit Black, Ethel Carrick and Mary Cockburn Mercer have all sought inspiration there.
Julie Ewington is an independent writer, curator and broadcaster. She has taught art history at Australian universities, focusing on modern and contemporary art.
Ewington will be leading the World Art Tour Painters of Provence in May 2026.
