The sesquicentenary of the Chevert Expedition

Commencing at 11 am hear short presentations on the scientific significance of the Chevert Expedition - Australia’s first multidisciplinary scientific expedition, to northern Australia and New Guinea (as it then was) and its links with the Linnean Society of NSW.

Speakers will include the President of the Linnean Society, Paul Adam (UNSW), who will provide a brief historical overview of the Society and Sir William Macleay, Anthony Gill (Chau Chak Wing Museum) who is studying the fish collected on the Chevert Expedition, Jude Philp (Chau Chak Wing Museum) who will speak on some of the socio-cultural aspects of the expedition, particularly islands visited in the Torres Strait, and Karen Wilson (National Herbarium of NSW) who will present on specimens of the flora obtained during the expedition. Additional speakers will be added to speak further on the Chevert Expedition.

The majority of the collections from the Chevert expedition are held in the Chau Chak Wing Museum. The talks will be followed by free time to tour museum exhibitions, which include materials collected during the expedition.
