The role of the pub in 19th century Sydney

Were the pubs more than just places to drink?

Shirley Fitzgerald, well-known public historian and former City of Sydney historian, will talk about the hotels that formed the centre of the community for many in the 19th century.

They are fascinating places on which to hang some good local social history.

Shirley has written 2 books about pubs in Ultimo and Pyrmont. She also has much to tell about the place of the pub in 19th century Sydney society generally.
