Artist Nicole Welsh examines the important subject of Domestic Violence Awareness through storytelling and symbolism

Artist Statement:

I follow the journey of the victim in a domestically violent relationship from start to finish, exposing the ‘red flags’ and signs that hint at us the relationship is toxic and abusive. This is of high importance to me, as the series serves as an awareness and understanding of domestic violence that many people, including myself, have experienced. Friends and family members of victims may not be so sure how to help in these situations, so breaking the signs down into paintings are made in the hope that they can understand it better, and do more to spread awareness. For victims also, due to the manipulative behaviour of the relationship, it is extremely difficult to know or understand if they are in a domestically violent situation, so the series works in a way that the symptoms are clear, and hopefully if a victim were to recognize this, would seek help, assistance and the confidence to leave.
