Meeting in the usual place, upstairs at The Shakespeare Hotel, 200 Street, Surry Hills, Sydney, we will be discussing The Line of Beauty (2004) by Alan Hollinghurst.
The novel is about sex, class, politics, beauty and betrayal.
In 1983, young Oxford graduate Nick moves into the elegant Notting Hill home of a wealthy family. Nick becomes fascinated by their money and artistic connections, while exploring his own emerging gay identity.
In the background, there is Thatcher’s Britain. Something that I (Dale) can relate to, as I arrived in Britain in 1985. There are the realities of class, hypocrisy and the AIDS crisis.
