Terraced

Discover iconic terrace houses from Darlinghurst, Redfern and Surry Hills around the CBD by James Voller

Produced by the City of Sydney

If there is one thing Sydney-siders like to talk about, it’s houses. From the white sails of our Opera House, to our endless obsession with property, when it comes to the Emerald City: we know there’s no place like home.

Now, a new temporary public artwork from Art & About is bringing that quintessential Sydney dwelling, the terraced house, right into the heart of CBD.

Terraced is a multi-site photographic installation that places large-scale images of terraced houses against the vast concrete backdrop of the city.

The terraced house has been a feature of Sydney since 1830, and over time have been home to a diverse range of our citizens. In creating Terraced, artist James Voller has photographed some of the most character-filled terraces in Redfern, Darlinghurst and Surry Hills.

Voller’s practice focuses on creating large-scale public artworks that examine place and architecture. The New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based artist has had his work exhibited on both sides of the Tasman, as well in the Museum of London.

In creating Terraced, Voller is allowing us a moment of surprise as the familiar becomes strange, when easily recognisable terraced houses appear in urban environments not usually associated with domestic life.

Terraced can be found throughout linked sites in the CBD, prompting us in different ways to reflect on our city’s ever-evolving identity. At each one, why not pause for a moment to ponder where Sydney has come from, where Sydney is now, and where it is heading?
