Symposium: Living Our Languages

NAIDOC Week

This event is organised in collaboration with the University of Sydney.

Day 1: State Library NSW

A centrepiece of the Library’s NAIDOC Week celebrations, this two-day event, in collaboration with the University of Sydney, will explore the achievements and challenges in protecting and rebuilding Australia’s Indigenous languages. It will also provide practical guidance for those involved in teaching, learning and reviving their languages.

Day 1 is a symposium which will open with a presentation on the role of the Library’s archives in language revival By Professor Jakelin Troy, Director of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research at the University of Sydney. Jack Buckskin and Dr Rob Amery are also featured speakers. Rob is a linguist who has researched Kaurna and has worked with community to protect and strengthen their language. Jack Buckskin is a Kaurna man who has many years experience of learning and teaching his language, and is now raising his children in Kaurna. The day will close with the launch of My Weekend with Pop – Stories in Aboriginal Languages, an online education resource developed by the State Library in partnership with Yuwaalaraay artist Lucy Simpson.

Day 2: University of Sydney

Day 2 is a day of workshops organised by John Hobson and Susan Poetsch in the School of Education & Social Work, at the University of Sydney. The workshops are designed for community members who are actively involved in reviving their languages. It will be practical in nature, covering formulaic language learning, revival theory and planning, speaking language to babies, and training opportunities.

This event is part of City of Sydney’s 2017 NAIDOC Week.
