The street at night is an inspiring time for photographers, presenting numerous creative possibilities.
The blacks are indeed black and by comparison colours seem to be more vivid than in the daylight. The dark artificially-lit street takes on a mysterious, enigmatic quality, and movement takes on different form at night.
Over 5 weeks students will explore Sydney at night with photographer Lynn Smith. From Darlinghurst to Millers Point this course explores the techniques required for low-light shooting alongside the creative opportunities presented by artificial lighting, and the busy city streets.
Starting with an introduction to key photographers working within the genre, the first week will provide students with an understanding of the behaviour of light, the effect of moving objects, the technical aspects of the lens and colour at night.
Subsequent weeks will see students participate in 3 evening shoots investigating long exposure, lenses, colour and moving objects, culminating in a peer review of students' works to develop a visual narrative.
This course is for people who are eager to explore the creative possibilities of shooting in low-light and are looking towards building a long-term project.
Shoot times for weeks 2, 3 and 4 are subject to change to accommodate seasonal variation. Times will be confirmed during the first class.
*Please note this course requires students travel to alternative locations for shoots. Locations will be confirmed with students the week prior.
