Square is an improvisation in visual art that uses a set format as an aesthetic platform or starting point. Using the square as a unifying construct, 10 artists will improvise on the dimensions 40 x 40 x 2.5 cm, the dimensions of standard wooden panels. Each artist uses 4 sets of dimensions and/or panels in any way they like. Square artists work in 2 and 3 dimensions and colour, line and texture. Some are painters and some sculptors but all work across the borders between these media. The artists are connected by both formal investigations in the relationship between realism and abstraction and through their individual studio-based practices. This connection can be as reductive abstraction – where “natural” experiences are reduced until abstract elements appear as shapes either on a flat surface or in 3D space – or as the abstraction of geometric elements, non-objective art and construct suggestive shapes.
Artists include Richard Dunn, Lynne Eastaway, Daniel Hollier, Pollyxenia Joannou, Lisa Jones, Stephen Little, Tom Loveday, Al Munro, Catherine O’Donnell, and Stuart Smith.
