Ching Chong Chinaman is a brash, outlandish exploration of identity, race, assimilation, and what it means to be a family.

Slanted Theatre is thrilled to be showcasing its debut production - Lauren Yee’s smash hit Ching Chong Chinaman.

Ching Chong Chinaman tells the story of The Wong family, a typical all-American family. Ed is gearing up for his company golf tournament. Grace is a typical housewife. Their daughter, Desdemona is applying to her dream college, Princeton. And Upton is working on his video game career but struggling to balance his homework and chores with training... and one day brings in a young Chinese man, Jinqiang or “Ching Chong,” which turns a seemingly perfect family on its head.

13 years after the original publication the play’s approach to prejudice, racism, acceptance, and the search for identity remain as relevant as ever. This is the first production for Slanted Theatre and features an all Asian cast and crew.

Preview 14 & 15 January

Season 16-17 & 20-23 January

“A wildly inventive, raucously funny ride. Though rooted in Asian American literary tradition, this play upends its conventions with inspired irreverence. You have not seen anything like this before. The fourth wave of Asian American playwriting has arrived!” – The New York Times

By Arrangement with ORiGiN™ Theatrical, On Behalf of Samuel French, A Concord Theatricals Company

Presented by Slanted Theatre, a new theatre collective established to showcase Asian-Australian emerging artists, both onstage and backstage.
