Sharks in the media

What's the real story?

Australians love the ocean, and our media loves a shark story. Every year, TV, newspaper and online stories are led with eye-catching headlines about shark sightings, “monster” sharks and shark bites.

Are sharks in plague proportions, lurking on our coastlines, or is there a different story that needs to be told about these often misunderstood creatures?

ABC broadcaster Wendy Harmer will moderate a panel discussion featuring 60 Minutes journalist Allison Langdon, Sydney University’s Dr Christopher Pepin-Neff and Australian Geographic’s Dr Blake Chapman on the opportunities and challenges on news reporting on shark issues in Australia.
