Redfern Kyokushin Karate is a community-based program where you will learn the traditional Kyokushin style of Karate.
We provide free lessons as a way of involving, and contributing to, our local community. This will introduce you to training in Kyokushin Karate as a healthy lifestyle choice and to increase your level of fitness.
At the same time as teaching you self-defence, Kyokushin Karate provides a level of confidence which you can use in everyday life.
Kyokushin Karate is a style of stand-up, full contact karate, founded in 1964 by Korean-Japanese Masutatsu Oyama.
Kyokushin is Japanese for “the ultimate truth.” Kyokushin is rooted in a philosophy of self-improvement, discipline and hard training.
Kyokushin Karate is famous for being one of the “harder” substyles of Karate. This style of Karate allows full contact sparring (kumite) and does not use any protective gear, except for a mouth guard and groin protection. Kyokushin kumite allows kicks against an opponent’s head, body and legs. It also allows knee strikes and punches to an opponent’s body (but not to their head).
This focus on more realistic unarmed combat is exemplified by the “spirit” of Kyokushin: The heart of our karate is real fighting. There can be no proof without real fighting. Without proof there is no trust. Without trust there is no respect. This is a definition in the world of martial arts.
