Try your hand at the age-old art of etching, learning styles and techniques from traditional to contemporary in this fun 4-week beginner’s course.
Follow in the footsteps of the old masters and discover how Rembrandt and Goya made their marks. Then unleash your imagination as you create and print your own beautiful limited-edition prints.
During this exciting course you’ll discover how to prepare, inscribe and print unique images from an etching plate.
Under the expert guidance of our experienced tutor you’ll first learn how to select and compose an image. Then discover how to etch different types of line to bring tone and depth to your artworks.
Working with aluminium plates, printing inks and non-toxic copper sulphate, you’ll get familiar with the hand tools and equipment of the ‘intaglio’ printmaker’s art. As the course progresses you’ll experience the many techniques for creating subtle surface textures, including drawing, scratching, scraping, polishing and wiping ink.
Once you’ve created your masterpiece you’ll learn the techniques of printing using an etching press. Your tutor will guide you through the full printing process, from registering your plate through to printing onto different types of paper.
