Learn the oil painting techniques of the great masters and be inspired by the portrait paintings of the 16th Century in the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Michelle Hiscock guides you on a tour of the collection including the original Tudor painting of Henry VIII with a ground-breaking virtual-reality experience of this magnificent painting which reveals unprecedented insights into a great work of portraiture.

After the tour Michelle Hiscock takes you back to the NAS studios and introduces you to the artistic conventions of this important period of art, as well as the fundamental techniques of classical oil painting.

Michelle demonstrates the methods and materials of traditional techniques such as support preparation, coloured grounds and composition, tonal underpainting, palette-setting, colour-mixing and structuring oil paint in layers.

After being inspired by the 16th century portraits in the gallery, you will have the opportunity to paint a full-scale fragment from a selection of portraits by the greatest painter of the Tudor Court, Hans Holbein the Younger.
