'We live our lives, determined to justify our existence. We debate choices infinitely, overthink everything, defend every move. But when do we stop and simply ask, ‘why not?’

Gallery 1-4 | Porque NO5 - Deadly Sins by BlueMelon

Nicholas Wilkinson, Vicki Inglis, Siann Lau, Anthea Ben-Naim, Adrian Harper, Paris Crouch, Tim Christinaut, Leanne Tomkins, Jacs Wallace, Rachel Ainge, Paulo Guti, Liam ODonnell, Mike Scanu, Trinity Morris, Rosie Rushton, Harley Ryan and Madeleine Christison

Today, we gather to celebrate the antithesis of justification. Porque No, meaning ‘Why Not’ provides an opportunity to celebrate creativity for the simple sake of doing so. Here, explanation or validation of ideas has no place. Everything is welcome. The absence of rationale and the desire to create is the engine that transforms the space.

Now in our tenth year, we explore the Seven Deadly Sins, culminating in a diverse expression of the human experience. Because as intrinsic to our being as emotion or reason, are the sins we commit; pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. The theme exhibits the way we perceive our sins as individuals; the experience is personal. It’s ours and ours only. The interpretation of these sensations into creative practice is instinctive, passionate and honest.

Seven sins. Seventeen artists. A collection of 112 works. One space that brings us together.

After all, why not?

17 Sydney based artists of different skill sets come together to showcase their work and participate in an open exploration of the Seven Deadly Sins. Each artist depicts a sin of their choice, interpreted in their favourite medium, to spark discussion of what it really means to be a human capable of wrongdoing, and what society reflects back to us about virtue and forgiveness.

The exhibition features a selection of media, ranging from photography and digital, to illustration, pencil, gouache & ink, oil and mixed media. From the playful, to the profound, and all curious by nature, each artist draws on different inspirations from the world around us all to create striking works in a public space.
