Phillipa Butters & Paul Williams: Edge of the Id

Art exhibition

Edge of the Id is the latest duo exhibition by Phillipa Butters and Paul Williams. Their art practices share intensities of abstraction and spontaneity in depicting the hidden signs within landscape and human forms. Butters’ works incorporate recurring abstract symbols to characterise fossil markings. By relating evolutionary history of the land to human journeys, Butters traces the impacts of markings on shaping individual consciousness. Of significance to Williams is the complex relationship between man and landscape that appears in ancient rock engravings and modern navigation markers. His approach to painting is to seek out the concealed narrative beneath the surface, creating works that oscillate between abstract figuration and landscape.

“I became unexpectedly curious about fossil markings created by events in time and how we all have markings that were formed, shaped and impacted by events in our own individual journeys” – Phillipa Butters.

“I constantly seek new ways to interpret human form in its everyday activities. As to landscape with its hidden traces of humanity, I set the scene in the environs of North Harbour amid sweeping blue water and green hills.” – Paul Williams

This exhibition will be opened by Mark Stapleton, an independent consultant working in arts, culture and the public, private and community sectors.
