For the last decade, Andrew Turley has uncovered many of the lesser-known works of the iconic Australian artist, Sidney Nolan.

Using maps, photos, paintings, diary entries and Nolan’s reference notes viewed from the newly opened Sidney Nolan Archives at the National Library of Australia, Turley has revealed previously unknown histories, including Nolan’s 1961 ‘Auschwitz’ works.

In this talk, Turley will explain Nolan’s half-century-long preoccupation with the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, which began as early as 1939. He will also explore the significance of Nolan’s Auschwitz series, painted with great intensity in late 1961, as the Adolf Eichmann trial came to a close and as Nolan prepared to visit Auschwitz.

This series has never been seen before in Australia but uncovers an extremely important chapter in Nolan’s life: one that shaped his imagery for decades to come.
