Michael Jalaru Torres: Native

Head On Photo Festival 2019

It was not until 1967 that Aboriginal peoples were considered citizens of Australia. The federal constitution, written in 1900, explicitly stated that Aboriginal peoples would not be counted in any state or federal census.

Self-taught photographer Michael Jalaru Torres explores this recent history of his country in the upcoming exhibition Native. The exhibition was presented by Cooee Art Gallery in conjunction with Head On Photo Festival 2019.

Native illustrates a dark history of Australia and also the artist’s emotional connection to country. By using a camera to capture the colours and texture of the land of surrounding Broome, Torres states, “First Nation peoples of Australia see being native as an important connection to the land and we are of the land even to this day. But past and present views and policy has shown that native people are merely a hindrance to their way of life.”
