What better time to make a return to the Foundry616 stage with this special project than on the 100th anniversary of Thelonius Monk. Sydney saxophone star Michael Griffin brings a night of music that is fuelled by some seriously good horns, as he and his all star 8-piece band pay homage to one of the world’s biggest jazz legends.
A semifinalist at the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone competition, Griffin subsequently lived and worked in New York and has developed a reputation both as a leader and sideman, performing widely throughout Australia and the US. His debut album Unexpected Greeting (ABC) received 4 stars in the Australian and listed in Music Australia’s top 10 Australian Jazz albums of 2015.
This tribute is based on a tour that Monk did in 1968 with the Thelonious Monk Octet. The tour featured, Phil Woods (alto sax), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Ray Copeland (trumpet), Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Larry Gales (bass), Ben Riley (drums) and of course Monk.
The arrangements for the horn section were essentially Monk’s piano transcriptions written out for a band, which is what Griffin is doing, arranging Monk’s voicings for a horn section to get that genuine Monk sound. Featuring songs such as Ruby My Dear, We See, Epistrophy, Evidence, Blue Monk, Crepescule with Nellie and many more.
Michael Griffin has brought many outstanding shows to Foundry616, including a tribute to Charlie Parker. Be sure to book early as this tribute to Monk is one night of jazz not to be missed!
