Michael Bell a much loved and respected artist from Newcastle, is bringing his playful and colourful relief artworks to Sydney for an exhibition at Flinders Street Gallery, Surry Hills.

Bell draws his inspiration from popular or consumer culture, staging his absurdist figures and icons in local suburban landscapes.

He offers the familiar and real word in a novel pop fashion. With clever nods to art history, vintage animation and mass culture, Bell brings a charming sense of humour to these delightful paintings. The joy of 're-emerging' from isolation and studio lockdowns of the past two years is also evident in this new work. Michael Bell describes this series as “a happy slow-burn of expressionist pop”. As you survey his work the viewer can only smile right back along with him.

On show 24 September - 5 November 2022.

Open Wednesday - Saturday 11am - 6pm (or by appointment).
