This event is offered as part of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2026. We’ll bring to light the histories and stories in the archives that centre on this year’s theme: Ecstatica. Together we will explore the City of Sydney archives to trace the festival’s origins in resistance and protest and its evolution into the vibrant celebration it is today.

Use images from the City of Sydney Archives to create a laser-cut printing plate and print your image on our printing press. Led by experienced facilitators in the Darling Square Library makerspace, this workshop is a great introduction to laser-cut printmaking and the City of Sydney Archives.

You’ll be guided through how to access historical images from the City Archives to make a laser-cut relief plate. Once you’re happy with your final design, we’ll help you print it on our small press. You’ll receive your relief plate and print during the class.

Using the City’s Archives collection of historical images as inspiration, you’ll be guided to create your own artwork that reflects Sydney’s queer history.
