Legendary Australian World/Jazz ensemble Mara! celebrate their 35th Anniversary, together with long-time associates the Martenitsa Choir, in a concert featuring gems from their treasury of inspiring, inventive and virtuosic music, spanning a remarkable career of international touring and recording since 1984.
Over the past 3½ decades, Mara! have created a new Australian musical genre – an unparalleled fusion of roots and modern jazz expressionism, laced with influences from early music to rock while paying tribute to Anglo-Celtic, Middle Eastern, Balkan and Mediterranean traditions that form the building blocks of our treasured Australian culture.
This exceptional ensemble, which features jazz and world music royalty – Sandy Evans on saxophones, Paul Cutlan on clarinets and saxophones, Lloyd Swanton on double bass, Llew Kiek on plucked strings with the inimitable Mara Kiek’s voice and percussion – will perform highlights from their classic albums including 2 ARIA winners and 2 ARIA nominees, featuring their unique signature sound distilled over three and a half decades.
Martenitsa Choir with Bulgarian soloist Silvia Entcheva (ex. Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares Choir) will join Mara! to perform excerpts from their ground-breaking collaborative suites Sezoni and Tra Parole e Silenzio.
“….different sound-worlds kept opening up like fresh vistas on a maritime journey…ultimately it is the collective imaginative responses to its influences that makes Mara! such a bright jewel in Australia’s world-music crown.” SMH (Sydney) 2016
