Luke Hardy | The Waking Dream

Where
Stanley Street Gallery
Stanley Street Gallery
1/52-54 Stanley Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010
When

Every day, 11am to 6pm Friday 3 February to Saturday 25 February

These images are meditations on evanescence, a response to the way dreams elude us, abstracting and vanishing the more we try to recall them. Like fire, water and smoke. Not unlike the process of making art.

"The figures in my work are sleepwalkers. In heightened states of mind, their gestures and words are inarticulate. They all seem mute or muted.

Throughout these images, I have cast a small repertory of quite minimal pictorial elements.

The calligraphy brush, a tool for turning inspiration into forms, draws no lasting shape.

The gold-leaf screen, a medium on which to make art, is merely liminal.

And moments of contact between the human figures are just as illusory: shadows touching shadows.

The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi nurtures the authentic in its embrace of three realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."
