Le Dernier Appel (The Last Cry)

A new dance work by Marrugeku

Carriageworks and Marrugeku present Le Dernier Appel (The Last Cry). The Australian-New Caledonian co-production explores how dance in the Asia Pacific region is transfigured by decolonisation.

Inspired by the New Caledonian referendum for independence, Le Dernier Appel challenges old and new knowledge as power is reconfigured. The work features design by New Caledonian artist Nicolas Mole and music by Ngaiire, Nick Wales and Bree van Reyk.

“Colonisation has defined us. To undo the past is impossible. Behind us are histories of invasion, migration, war and displacement. As the vote for independence approaches, we wait in states of instability, confusion and hope.” – Serge Aime Coulibaly (director and choreographer), Dalisa Pigram (choreographer), and Rachael Swain (Dramaturg).
