Ken Knight’s new series, Waterhole, explores the notion that the Australian psyche is based ostensibly on the bush.
“We have endless short stories, poetry and folklore that idealises the romance of the bush and many early Australian impressionist artists portrayed this vision. This exhibition reflects my desire to show Australia through this perception in a more contemporary context,” says Knight.
Knight’s impressionist images are derived from a direct response to his surroundings. Reflecting on his work, Knight says, “The challenge for me is not so much in relaying photographic information, but in capturing the essence and spirit of a scene. By reducing the landscape and abstracting elements from it, I enable the viewer to make an intimate interpretation.”
The waterhole in the Australian landscape is akin to an oasis and is an enduring theme in Knight’s work. Many of the waterhole locations in the exhibition are derived from locations between Harden and Jugiong in NSW. The exhibition also includes paintings of the gum tree. The scribbly gums on the south coast provide a stimulating motif and the multi panel painting came from the idea of echoing the forest canopy in a horizontal context.
Knight relies heavily on the use of colour and light in these dynamic works, used in conjunction with thick paint, palette knife and energetic brushwork creating a life force integral to each painting.
“Standing before one of Ken’s paintings is more than just looking at a landscape – it transports you to that place. Be it memory or imagination, it takes you there. These are very special works by one of the world’s great plein air masters,” says gallerist, Peter Aitken.
This is the third exhibition with Wentworth Galleries.
