Junot Díaz: Islandborn

Pulitzer Prize winner Junot Diaz speaks to Michael Williams about Islandborn

A voracious young reader, the Dominican-born Junot Díaz rarely saw characters in books who resembled him. His first foray into fiction for young readers, Islandborn, redresses this absence.

It follows a young Dominican-American girl as she learns both joyful and heart-breaking stories from her homeland. Junot joins Wheeler Centre director Michael Williams to discuss the delightful, beautifully illustrated children’s book. Reflecting on the themes of identity and belonging that have underpinned his celebrated adult fiction including his Pulitzer Prize–winning The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
