For the 25th Biennale of Sydney, Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding presents Picking up the Pieces, an installation that reimagines bricks drawn from the iconic Aboriginal flag mural at Redfern’s The Block.

These bricks are threaded onto looping structures inspired by childhood play, transforming a symbol of heavy colonial infrastructure into one of resilience, creativity, and collective joy.

By shifting their meaning from objects of control and displacement to objects of empowerment, Golding celebrates the enduring strength of community and culture.

Extending this spirit of transformation, Golding will also lead a jewellery-making workshop at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in May, where participants will create wearable works from brick forms – turning fragments of history into vessels of pride.
