Curated by Elisabeth Cummings and Damian Barker
The works in this exhibition have been selected by Elisabeth and their son, Damian Barker and come from different periods in James Barker’s career. The exhibition includes paintings from the years they spent in Florence, from the late 1950s to 1960s. Both artists having studied at East Sydney Tech, as it was previously known (now known as The National Art School), made the journey to Europe where they lived and worked until the late 60s. Returning to Sydney, James continued to paint and teach.
“As a Gallerist it is interesting to reflect on how we came to be exhibiting James Barker's work, I arrived in Sydney a young teenager in the late 1970s and was introduced to my cousin Margot Bentley's very dear friend, Elisabeth Cummings and to her [**then**] husband, James Barker. Having known Elisabeth and James for some time, it is a delight that we can take this opportunity to celebrate the work of Artist, James Barker. The works in this exhibition move between James's two main subjects, landscapes and interiors, with works from the 1970s through to the late 2000s." Liza Feeney Co Director Stanley Street Gallery
