Please note that the dates listed are for the first session out of four. The other 3 sessions will be on the same day and time as your initial session for three consecutive weeks.
New to ceramics or feeling a little rusty? Book into our 4-session beginners ceramics course.
You will receive a comprehensive introduction to key ceramics techniques including throwing, trimming, hand-building and glazing. At the end of the course you will have 3-4 finished pieces. Once you have taken this course you can hone your new skills in our $39, 2-hour Returning Student Ceramics Sessions.
Hand-building session:
This hand-building class introduces a broad approach to building functional clay objects. In this class you will:
be introduced to coil and slab techniques & other forming methods
learn an incredibly efficient technique for forming beautiful plates
make a piece (or 2), which MakerSpace will bisque fire in preparation for your glazing session
Throwing session:
Learn how to throw your own ceramics on a pottery wheel. By the end of this class you will have:
knowledge of pottery wheels and how to use them
an understanding of the processes involved in throwing ceramics
a piece (or 2) ready to take into your trimming class.
Trimming session:
Retrieve the piece you threw last time and use trimming tools to finalise its shape and texture. By the end of this class you will:
know how to use trimming tools to give your work a refined shape and texture.
understand the processes involved in throwing and trimming ceramics
have a piece (or 2) ready for your glazing session.
Glazing session:
This is the last step, put the final touches on your pieces with a layer of glaze. In this class you will learn:
to select glazes and under-glazes
how to prepare your work for glazing
how to apply dip and brush-on glazes.
