*The safety of our communities, customers and staff is our top priority. City of Sydney staff are monitoring developments relating to Covid-19 (novel coronavirus) daily and assessing any potential impact on city services and events. We have also introduced a number of precautionary measures to protect members of the community, our volunteers and our staff.
We have cancelled or postponed all non-essential City of Sydney events until further notice including this event.
Thank you for your support of our City of Sydney Library events and we look forward to seeing you again in the future.
The free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, is the 6th most visited site on the internet. The content on the site is created and edited by volunteer contributors all over the world. However it has long been acknowledged that the there is a lack of diversity among contributors.
People are meeting up across the world to help remedy the imbalance and bias in the diversity of voices on Wikipedia. City of Sydney Library is joining this movement, hosting edit-a-thons to increase and improve content relevant to our diverse communities.
Everyone is welcome to join our edit-a-thon at the Lawn Library pop up at Redfern Community Centre. It will be led by Kirsten Thorpe, Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, and experienced Wikipedia editor Kathryn Barwick. Kirsten’s professional and research interests relate to Indigenous self-determination in libraries and archives. Nathan works to ensure that cultural and historical narratives in libraries, museums and archives are being told and controlled by First Nations people. With their help, participants will focus on improving articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia.
No experience is necessary to join the edit-a-thon. Bring your own laptop or tablet and connect to our free wi-fi, or use one of our devices (a limited number of devices will be available for use at the event).
Participants are encouraged to set up their Wikipedia account prior to the day if they don’t already have one.
Bookings are recommended as places are limited.
