Head to the Art Gallery of NSW for a special screening of True history of the Kelly Gang (2019), followed by a Q&A with director Justin Kurzel.
Kurzel’s acclaimed drama reimagines the mythology of Australia’s most notorious outlaw, recasting Ned Kelly as a young rebel forged by poverty, colonial brutality, and a fierce desire for freedom. Adapted from Peter Carey’s Booker Prize–winning novel, the film moves provocatively between history and legend, spinning Kelly’s story with a raw, punk energy. Kurzel’s swaggering biopic, influenced by Sidney Nolan’s iconic 1946–47 paintings of the 19th-century bushranger and his gang, reworks the Kelly legend for a new generation.
The screening will be followed by an in-conversation with director Justin Kurzel and Ruby Arrowsmith-Todd, curator of film, exploring the film’s inspirations, Nolan’s influence, and the enduring legacy of bushranger mythologies on Australian screens.
Rated MA15+.
The film screens in association with the exhibition Nolan: Origins.
Presented by Sydney Cinémathèque at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
