Sunday 7 February from 8pm to 9:45pm
Australia’s most innovative instrumentalists Ensemble Offspring celebrate the work of legendary minimalist composer Steve Reich, performing a suite of his most pioneering, hypnotic music.
Led by acclaimed percussionist Claire Edwardes, ARIA-nominated Sydney musical mavericks Ensemble Offspring have are a collective of multi-talented collaborators exploring new ideas through experiential performances that transcend genre and place.
Together they bring to life the visionary sounds of living American composer Steve Reich, whose breakthroughs in repetitive patterns, phasing, tape loops and harmonic rhythm made him indisputably one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century.
Featured are Reich’s famous “Drumming Part One” and “Music for Pieces of Wood”, the minimalist layered solo originally for flute but this time for vibraphone “Vermont Counterpoint”, and his more recent percussion and piano work, “Quartet”. Bernadette Harvey will also perform Kevin Puts’s three-movement piano solo, “Alternating Current”.
With Bernadette Harvey and Benjamin Kopp on piano, and Claire Edwardes, Mark Robinson, Kevin Man, and Kerryn Joyce on percussion.
This initiative is part of the Summer in the City program proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Sydney. We’re working together to revitalise the city centre.
