Five visual artists explore the possibilities of East Sydney Community and Arts Centre as a blank canvas. The artists respond to the venue’s history, location and significance.
After more than a decade documenting the decay, development and gentrification of Sydney’s inner suburbs, Ben Morley now turns his attention to the finer, overlooked details in the laneways and side streets of the inner city and beyond. Rusty corrugated iron, faded beaten up fences and dual tones of patched up paintwork provide the back drop to this new body of work.
Born in Manchester, now living in Sydney, Ben Morley tells the story of the city’s development through his painting. Ben completed his Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University in 2001. During this time, the ex-industrial environments of Leeds and Manchester became the subject of his artistic practice. After relocating to Chippendale in 2004 he began to document the area’s rapidly changing environment. Ben is fascinated by these ever-changing urban landscapes and tries to capture portraits of the city as it evolves.
