Summer comes alive with the energetic, joy-filled rhythms of Latin American cumbia, performed by Australia’s favourite 15-piece orchestra of Colombian and Australian musicians.
Returning to the Sydney stage after sold-out performance in 2020, Cumbiamuffin’s hotshot horn section, percussionists and Colombian singers Angela Rosero and Alfonso Mosquera generate an infectious wall of sound, melding Caribbean elements of ragga and roots with the big band, dancefloor swing of pure Latino cumbia.
Cumbiamuffin was created by trombonist Mike Raper – the musical lead of the band – and Colombian-born guitarist Carlos Arango to bring together top musicians from Australia and Colombia and introduce Australian audiences to the addictive, high energy, big brass band live sound of cumbia.
The group has kickstarted dance floors at festivals across Australia, including Manly Jazz Festival, Darling Harbour Fiesta and Byron Bay’s iconic Bluesfest.
This initiative is part of the Summer in the City program proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Sydney. We’re working together to revitalise the city centre.
