Convergence: Carol Gill & Redherring joint exhibition

Experience the creative intersection of two distinct artistic voices in Convergence, a joint exhibition by Hawkesbury-based artists Carol Gill and Redherring (AKA Mark Wilson). 

Having met while volunteering at the Ferry Artists Gallery in Wisemans Ferry, the duo regularly discussed collaborating on a joint exhibition. Convergence is the realisation of that shared vision, a convergence of two unique visual styles, backgrounds, and creative techniques. 

Carol Gill has called the Hawkesbury home for more than 35 years. Deeply connected to the surrounding natural environment, her practice is shaped by her background in graphic design, her love for local flora and fauna, and her heritage as descendant of a long line of skilled female crafters.

Working from her studio in Webbs Creek, Carol is a mixed-media artist who translates her en plein air sketches into vibrant, layered studio works. For Carol, the tactile process of collage, building up layers of colour and texture with mulberry paper (hanji), tissue paper, gouache and watercolour represents the delicate web of the natural environment. 

This hands-on method appeals to her deeply ingrained sense of ‘making’, resulting in a rich, textured interpretation of the landscape alongside still-life pieces inspired by her collection of handmade ceramics. 

Redherring is a Hawkesbury resident of 12 years and a recent Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) graduate from UNSW, working from his studio in Vineyard. He approaches art through a highly personal lens, guided by nostalgia, popular culture, and his queer lived experience. 

Redherring’s work acts as a poetic narrative, driven by a philosophy that art should serve as an open, vulnerable space to challenge erasure and claim space. To achieve this, he intentionally experiments across contrasting mediums, including painting, printmaking, and ceramic sculpture. By juxtaposing the tactile, enduring qualities of clay and wood with the fleeting, immediate nature of street-art stencils, screen printing and typography, he bridges the gap between modern subcultures and deeply personal histories.

For Redherring, these diverse materials are not just surfaces, but active voices in a broader conversation about identity, resilience, and belonging.
