Chinatown Lion Dances

The Chinese Lion Dancers perform to the thunder of traditional red fire crackers to celebrate CNY in Chinatown

Produced by the City of Sydney

With plenty of drumming, flamboyance and skill, the Chinese Lion Dance teams bring Lunar New Year to Sydney’s Chinatown.

An integral part of City of Sydney’s Lunar New Year Festival, the Lion Dance is a Chinese tradition stretching back over 1,000 years and has featured in our Lunar New Year Festival since it began 21 years ago.

The thunder of red fire crackers helps scare away the bad fortune of the previous year to ensure a happy and prosperous Year of the Rooster.

Catch a Lion Dance performance and traditional Chinese crackers brought to you by the City of Sydney on the following dates:

  • Thursday 2 and 9 February
  • Friday 27 January, 3 and 10 February
  • Saturday 28 January, 4 and 11 February
  • Sunday 29 January, 5 and 12 February

2 performances per night, at 6pm and 6.30pm. Each performance is 10 minutes. Thomas Street is the location.

And don’t miss additional Lion Dance performances brought to you by the Dixon Street Chinese Committee:

  • Saturday 28 January and Sunday 5 February, 12pm – 4pm
